A talent can be a personal skill or strength that can be applied by young people in managing their daily lives and pursuing their goals. Talents are attributes that might emerge through young people pursuing their interests or when engaging in an activity that they have a special flair for. Talents and passions are often closely aligned. When recognized by young people and of others of significance, talents can be better understood, put to good effect and cultivated. This can build a young person’s self-esteem and self-efficacy; traits that are implicated in young people’s motivation to participate in developmentally conducive activities. Talents that are valued can lead to young people being offered specific opportunities that they might require support to capitalise on.
