- thought to reduce drinking by modulating the brain GABA and glutamate function, which is implicated in withdrawal symptoms
- only reaches desired levels in the brain after 1-2 weeks
- appears to be effective in maintaining abstinence from alcohol following withdrawal in dependent drinkers
